Rent McLaren 720S in Europe

With striking and original styling giving it a presence like few other supercars, an astonishingly potent drivetrain and one of the best chassis of any production car, the 720S isn’t just a performance benchmark like its 650S and 12C predecessors, but one of the most engaging and complete supercars on sale. McLaren says 91 per cent of the 720S is new, and the enlarged 4.0-litre engine features 41 per cent new content: turbos, intercoolers, cast-aluminium plenum, cylinder heads, crankshaft, pistons, and exhaust. There’s also lots of carbon fibre. Dubbed ‘Monocage II’, the chassis structure now incorporates an upper structure and windscreen surround, so it’s even more rigid than the 650. Lighter, too: its lightest dry weight is 1283kg, 18kg less than the equivalent 650S. There’s an enhanced centre of gravity, thanks to the engine being mounted 150mm lower than before. The aero work is off-the-scale: the panel ahead of the front wheels evacuates the turbulent high pressure air away and along the side to increase downforce, while a channel at the top of the doors ducts high velocity cooling air into the radiators in the engine bay. There are no bodywork slashes here, despite its mid-engined configuration. The 720S generates 50 per cent more downforce than the 650S managed at full tilt, has double the overall aerodynamic efficiency, and is 15 per cent more efficient in its cooling.

720S Performance

You might expect something mid-engined and rear-wheel drive with this much power to feel daunting, yet the 570S is remarkably easy to get used to. Thanks to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, you can just slot it into drive and pull away smoothly and without drama. The steering feels alive in your hands and gives you the confidence to push on when the road gets technical. Not only does this help involve you in the driving process, but it also serves as a reminder that McLaren are first and foremost a motorsport company and value such things as proper steering feel – something that can’t be said for Lamborghini and the rather numb steering of the Huracan. From a standstill, you’ll be doing 62mph after just 3.2 seconds and you’ll hit 100mph if you keep your foot down for another 3.1 seconds. Somehow, this never feels scary; a well sorted chassis and plenty of electronic assistance means you can easily use all of the car’s performance should conditions allow.

720S Interior

A crucial thing in any supercar is the driving position – and thankfully this McLaren’s is spot-on. For starters, the pedals line up neatly with the steering wheel and have just the right amount of space between them. Plus, the seats are comfortable and supportive and there’s loads of adjustment. Perhaps the best thing, though, is the visibility. While most rivals suffer from sizeable blind spots, the 720S has super-slim pillars and loads of glass, so it’s a doddle to see out of and place on the road. McLaren also takes a very different approach to arch-rival Ferrari when it comes to the design of the steering wheel; the Italian brand covers it in controls, whereas there isn’t a single button or switch on the wheel of the 720S. The indicators, wipers and lights are instead on conventional stalks, and all the easier to operate as a result. Meanwhile, you access the car’s various driving modes via two chunky dials on the centre console. True, the portrait orientation touchscreen for infotainment functions can be quite distracting to use on the move. But the digital instruments display a lot of information clearly, or can be folded down and away at the touch of a button, until you’re left with an ultra-minimalist readout like an F1 car’s.
