Mercedes-Benz E 220

The four-cylinder diesel engine in the E 220 d is smooth and quiet and pulls strongly from around 1500rpm, and the standard nine-speed automatic gearbox kicks down promptly when you floor the accelerator pedal. This may be the entry-level E-Class but it’s properly punchy.
