You could reasonably expect this new Porsche 911 GT3 RS to be more of a cosmetic makeover than comprehensive step forward. Especially as the pre-facelift car was so very good. But to the dismay of Porsche’s rivals and the delight of its fans, the new GT3 RS is sharper, faster and even more feelsome. Perfectly honed for the track but still hugely capable on the road, it is one of the most exciting and engaging new cars money can buy. When it comes to building hardcore, track-focussed cars with genuine motorsport pedigree, Porsche pretty much wrote the manual. In the 15 years since the very first 911 GT3 RS, Porsche has created a succession of faster and fiercer models. The latest of them being this: the 911 GT3 RS. Slammed low to the tarmac and wearing a spectacular array of wings, spoilers, air intakes and vents, it looks every inch the racer. Though obviously an evolution of the Gen 1 version launched in 2015, this new Gen 2 model looks even more aggressive. It’s more effective, too, with significantly increased downforce levels to aid high-speed stability, but less drag to preserve its 193mph top speed.

The new RS shares its 4-litre flat-six engine with the regular GT3, but enjoys gains of 20bhp and 8lb ft over that model – and the previous RS, too. The 9000rpm red line (up from 8250rpm) grabs headlines, but it’s the way in which this remarkable engine delivers its 513bhp and 347lb ft that’s most impressive. Yes, it’s a screamer, but there’s meaningful motivation at half that elevated red line and you can make devastating progress without going much above 7000rpm. Wound right up it’s a spine-tingling experience. One perfectly matched by the PDK transmission, which punches home up- and downshifts faster than ever and with more precision. There is no manual option, but in truth paddles complete the intensified RS experience. As you might expect, the bald performance stats are right on the money: 62mph arriving in 3.2sec (a tenth quicker than the previous RS) and the top speed being 193mph (unchanged). However, it’s what the RS does between those two benchmarks, specifically around that other great benchmark, the Nürburgring Nordschleife, that really takes your breath away: its lap time of 6:56.4 is 14 seconds faster than the AMG GT R’s and just 9 seconds shy of the GT2 RS, which has 177bhp and 206lb ft more at its disposal. 911 GT3 RS Interior

The RS’s hard-edged cabin is based on that of the GT3, with elements of 918 Spyder thrown in for good measure. The result, assembled like a Swiss watch movement, manages to convey track-hardened purpose and a machined sense of material extravagance as well as anything being made by McLaren or Ferrari. Aside from RS-specific details, such as fabric door pulls, much of it is familiar; the black-clad centre console spine, dashboard and superb part-TFT instrument cluster are all standard 991 carryovers. Everything clicks and clacks as though it were installed by stonemasons and is studiously functional, even allowing for the large number of buttons corralled into one spot. The RS’s new features, chiefly those plundered from Porsche’s hypercar, are typically the objects that stand out – not least because you hold on to one and sit on the other. The steering wheel, perfectly proportioned and clad in Alcantara, would make a minibus feel sporty and is flanked by cold-to-the-touch paddle shifters that have had some of their travel dialled out of them. It is the seats, though, that take the proverbial biscuit. Constructed from carbonfibre and decked out in leather and trouser-clutching microfibres, the fixed-back buckets pull off that rare trick of being both fabulously handsome and comfortable while simultaneously not relenting one shred of body core support when it really counts.
